Biography
Swedish composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, and vocal works that have been successfully performed throughout Europe. Österling’s work deals with the correspondance between music, language and rhetoric.
Mr. Österling (born February 12, 1966, Gällivare) attended the music course at Sjövik Community College in 1984-1985 and the music teacher-training course at the Örebro High School of Music from 1985-1989. He then went on to study composition at the Gothenburg College of Music from 1989-1993 with Lars Johan Werle and Ole Lützow-Holm, also studying form and analysis with Lennart Hall.
He was composer-in-residence at the western Swedish concert institute, Musik i Väst, between 1997-1999. Thereafter, he was composer-in-residence at the county theatre of Skövde. He has been a member of the Society of Swedish Composers (FST) since 1994, and was appointed Secretary-General in 2000, a position he held until 2004. In 2004 Österling was appointed secretary for the governmental survey made on symphony orchestras in Sweden.
In 2006, Österling was appointed organisational manager for the Swedish Musicians’ union. The work with cultural political issues has always been arried out parallell to composing.
In march 2007, Folkoperan (the ”People’s Opera”) in Stockholm gives the world premiere of Österling’s latest opera, Shit också! (Oh, shit!).
